Abstract

This chapter explains the role of the mother and family in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and how the parents’ role in the baby’s care be supported in the NICU. One of the greatest obstacles to parenting in the NICU is the “visitation” policy. Although family-centered care involves more than changing a policy, staff cannot fully partner with parents who have limited access to their baby and minimal participation in care and decision-making. Some staff may object loudly or quietly to a change in policy that welcomes parents all the time. To facilitate staff acceptance, present this change as similar to changes in technical-care. When a baby is admitted to the NICU, however, parents share responsibility of physical, safety, and developmental needs of their baby with the staff. The staff can support and encourage the parents’ rightful role in caregiving and decision-making throughout the baby’s hospitalization, beginning with admission.
