Abstract

This chapter covers seven main areas that are essential to the knowledge-base of the assisted living administrator. Area 1 provides the assisted living administrator with the information needed to understand and work with staff and residents from diverse cultural and social groups. Area 2 addresses the urgent need to acknowledge and learn about the unique fundamentals of Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual-Transgender older adults. Area 3 aids the assisted living administrator by providing knowledge of physiologic changes that normally occur in the body systems as people age. Area 4 considers the normal aging-related changes in neurological functioning, mental health functioning, memory, and cognition and their effects on psychological well-being of residents. Area 5 addresses the ever-changing and developing need for memory care. Area 6 focuses on palliative and hospice care, also an area of rapid growth and change within the assisted living industry. Area 7 concentrates on rights of residents living in assisted living.
