Abstract

Long-term services and supports (LTSS) enable those who need continual help because of physical, cognitive, or developmental disabilities to accomplish the necessary tasks of daily living. This support can be provided in one’s home or the home of a friend or relative, in a congregate housing complex, in an assisted living residence, or in a skilled nursing facility. In attempting to understand the differences and similarities that exist among nations regarding LTSS, this chapter examines how countries are responding to the new and growing challenges of assisting older people with LTSS. The chapter develops a typology of LTSS to serve as a framework for categorizing national LTSS systems. It presents specific examples of how different countries handle LTSS tasks to illustrate the range of approaches. These examples are used to help explain some of the complexities that arise when attempting to compare and contrast LTSS services on a global scale.
