Abstract

A multitude of legal issues confronts the contemporary nursing faculty members in the classroom, in clinical settings, and in their professional role as members of the faculty. Academic nursing administrators not only see these issues directly but also must help guide others through them and manage them as business matters, adding new dimensions (and new exposures to liability) to situations that are already complicated. If a university has one or more attorneys on staff, be sure that they are busy helping the university’s administrators conduct university business: reviewing and negotiating contracts, helping the director of human relations with specific employment-based issues, dealing with insurance companies and municipal authorities, and assisting the president and chief financial officer. This chapter discusses the role of university counsel as advisor, mediator, advocate; and as a trainor. At the core, the university attorney’s role is managing risks.
