Abstract

Communication is a main pillar of effective public health practice because of the need to reach large populations with timely and effective information about disease prevention. This chapter presents questions that are designed to examine broad knowledge of principles and strategies of effective public health communication and advocacy, and to test communication competencies. Practicing with these questions will enable readers to: ensure health literacy concepts are applied in communication efforts; identify communication gaps; propose recommendations for improving communication processes; use risk communication approaches to address public health issues and problems, and create and disseminate educational information related to specific emerging health issues and priorities to promote policy development. It also helps the reader to communicate lessons learned to community partners or global constituencies, communicate results of population health needs and asset assessments, and to provide a rationale for program proposals and evaluation to lay, professional, and policy audiences.
