Abstract

This chapter offers a description of memory networks with the encoding of intense life experiences being different than other memories. The origin of symptoms such as flashbacks is discussed with a distinction between implicit and explicit memory. It describes the unique challenge of introducing Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy to veterans with chronic trauma seeking care within the Department of Veterans Affairs and community mental health systems. The chapter discusses the EMDR treatment continuum ranging from EMDR to limited processing to restricted processing, as well as the EMDR intensive daily treatment. It addresses the reprocessing phases, Phases 4 to 6, providing the bilateral stimulation to reduce the subjective units of disturbance, enhance the validity of cognition, and provide a clear body scan. Witnessing the client’s profoundly disturbing memories change within a brief period is validating for the therapist and healing for the client.
