Abstract

As dementia affects all aspects of communication throughout the course of the condition, nurses need to frequently assess communication difficulties and identify effective ways of communicating verbally and nonverbally. When caring for people with dementia, the nurse's communication techniques often serve as an intervention not only for providing information in a way they can understand but also for addressing their psychosocial needs related to anxiety, distress, and emotional support. This chapter helps the reader to learn common communication issues during early-stage dementia as well as moderate and advanced dementia. It discusses the nursing strategies for communicating with people with dementia as well as describes nonverbal communication and cultural considerations.
