Abstract

The American Red Cross has played an integral role in disaster response in communities across the United States since 1881. This chapter provides an overview of the structure and governance of the Red Cross, its conceptual foundation, fundamental principles and congressional charter, working with partners, and a detailed description of how nursing fits into that mission. It presents the role of the Red Cross nurse, shelter nursing, and the core components of disaster response practice in the Red Cross. The chapter discusses nurse roles in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery phases and describes operational and strategic roles of Red Cross partners in promoting health before, during, and after disasters. It provides brief description on American Red Cross historical background, American Red Cross disaster partner, American Red Cross at the local, regional, and national levels, red cross nursing and the role of the American Red Cross nurse during a disaster.
