Abstract

Informatics and data collection have existed since the beginning of nursing. The framework of data, information, knowledge, and wisdom (DIKW) has a central role in nursing informatics. Nursing scholars added to the DIKW framework and conceptual work as nursing informatics continued to evolve as a specialty. This framework has been used to increase nursing visibility, as they use the electronic health record (EHR) to document assessments and interventions administered to patients. The EHR serves as nursing’s blueprint to patient care maintaining orders and test results related to patient status and care effectiveness. This chapter discusses about the DIKW framework and how information and technology impact the floor nurse. It explains how to correlate day to day data collection and utilization of clinical decision tools to recognize patient outcome and trends. The chapter explains the need for standardization in healthcare using technology.
