Abstract

This chapter offers information to guide selection of appropriate tools and measures to assist change leaders in rigorous use of improvement tools and highlights the value of interprofessional project teams to address the cost-quality dilemma. The complex and changing practice environment provides a venue steeped with situations worthy of attention aimed at improvement however, staying true to a disciplined and systematic approach without stifling creativity and innovation often becomes a larger obstacle. To strengthen data-driven decisions and next steps, it provides recommendations to assist teams make data visible and actionable using tables, graphs, and improvement tools. The chapter establishes common models and frameworks for improvement. It examines the cost-quality equation and how to build it into quality improvement. The chapter discusses cost avoidance and cost benefit as strategies to guide practice and policy change. It describes how to select and use quality improvement, frameworks, models, and tools.
