Abstract

Integrative Medicine is an approach to patient care that blends complementary health methods and lifestyle medicine with conventional medicine in a deliberate manner that is personalized, evidence-informed, and safe. Interest in complementary and integrative medicine (CIM) approaches is higher among patients with cancer than in the general population. Patients want to discuss CIM approaches with their medical team; however, many find their team members are not receptive or do not have time to engage in such discussions. Evidence supports the use of massage to help relieve pain, anxiety, constipation, and nausea and to improve overall quality of life. Perform a baseline assessment that covers lifestyle factors and symptoms or administer a quality-of-life survey. Create a comfortable environment that encourages open communication. Assess patient/caregiver goals and level of understanding regarding complementary integrative medicine.
