Abstract

Nurses encounter veterans in numerous healthcare settings in both the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and private sector. Veterans have many strengths, talents, insights, and resilience related to their service, training, and experience. Yet they may face unique challenges affecting their physical and mental health, which are intimately linked to their military service and the transition from military to civilian life. Owing to these complex and unique challenges, it is imperative that nurses be competent to serve and support this population. This chapter includes a discussion of the varying needs of veterans in the community, such as the transition from the Military Health System to the VHA, implications of the Maintaining Internal Systems and Strengthening Integrated Outside Networks (MISSION) Act, and issues related to veterans experiencing homelessness. It presents information on services and resources available to veterans and their families to assist veterans as they navigate reintegration to the civilian world.
