Abstract

Interpersonal violence toward and by children and adolescents occurs at home, in school, and in public spaces —playgrounds, streets, concerts. Violence-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects not only physical and mental health but also academic progress and behavior. This chapter enables school nurses to recognize how they are pivotal in promoting initiatives to prevent child violence toward themselves and others, creating interventions for healing, and in helping school staff to recognize the impact of PTSD and on learning and behavior. The chapter identifies the major types of violence affecting children and adolescents at home, in schools, in institutions, and communities. It enables the reader to recognize risk factors associated with children being a victim of and/or committing violent acts. The chapter identifies the physical and mental health effects, academic and behavioral consequences of violence victimization. It proposes initiatives to prevent/reduce violence affecting children and adolescents in schools and communities.
