This chapter provides eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) clinicians with a greater understanding of the inner world of the 911 telecommunicators (911 TCs). This highly underserved population has unique exposure to traumatic events and has responded well when treated with EMDR Therapy. 911 TCs routinely perform numerous tasks that are stressful. They monitor numerous phone lines, access multiple computer applications, and monitor video and alarm information systems. The 911 subculture is also joined by its member’s struggle with stress-related medical conditions. This is due to a combination of factors, including the 911 TC’s highly stressful work conditions, their suppressive Emotion Code, and a lack of skills training to boost resilience and enable effective stress management. Clinicians, who have directly observed 911 TCs at work, during “sit-alongs” in their Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs), have reported a greater understanding of their crucial role in emergency response.
