Community is both the cradle and theater for mental well-being. Community-based mental health services offer structure and support to individuals with mental health issues, in order to help them achieve an optimal level of functioning. This chapter considers community-based mental healthcare practices for optimal functioning of people in their communities. First, it addresses community mental health in the context of the activities and participation to which people aspire, regardless of their specific mental health impairment; within this context, their personal factors are considered as well as the lived environment. Second, it discusses mental health recovery models for satisfying personal and community functioning. Finally, the chapter identifies types of collaborative community mental healthcare practices and offer associated evidence. Collaborative multidisciplinary mental health services, in the community context, can be productive for cross-learning to optimize the mental health well-being of community residents.
