Abstract

This chapter traces the history of American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/AN) in the Pacific Northwest (PNW), discusses the two major cultural groups like Coastal Salish and Plateau people, and outlines the strengths of the people. It explains the demographic and geographical data, including the mix of rural tribal reservations, as well as urban AI/AN populations. The chapter shows the top causes of mortality for AI/ANs in the PNW based on epidemiology data, and also discusses the priority programs being undertaken to address the major health concerns. It describes the structure of health services delivery in the PNW region for American Indian/Alaska Natives, including the major organizations. The chapter reviews the role of nursing in addressing the health needs of American Indian/Alaska Natives. It then explores key resources and websites for additional information on PNW American Indian/Alaska Native health.
