Abstract

In the field of counseling, “marketing” usually conjures negative connotations, but marketing is not an expletive, earning a living is not criminal, and networking is not a fate worse than death. Becoming a member of a professional organization, such as the American Counseling Association (ACA), can help one to be aware of the lobbies available for professionals such as counselors. An ACA member can contact his or her local and state chapters of the ACA to learn of political opportunities and potential issues for future clients as well as counselors. In fact, a tech-savvy counselor can create a website with absolute control over content and format with a minimal investment of time and resources. Each counselor should be represented on the website page with a profile picture and professional information that includes education, credentialing, specializations, memberships, and a personal statement of counseling theory and practice.
