Abstract

Medicare and Medicaid have been powerful forces in the growth and structure of home care. Home health nursing practice focuses on providing quality health care for patients where a patient resides, whether a private home or an assisted living or personal care facility. There are five categories of home care agencies based on their mission, vision, and administrative and organizational framework. Official home care agencies are nonprofit entities that have the sup- port of public funding and qualify for Medicare and Medicaid reim- bursement as well as from private payers. Some of the community services offered may include licensing for child care and adult foster care, reproductive health clinics, tuberculosis testing and follow-up, and aging and disability services. The home health aide (HHA) is a paraprofessional member of the interdisciplinary team who works under the supervision of a registered nurse or therapist.
