Abstract

This chapter focuses on managing the health of women in a variety of settings, including internal medicine, primary care, family practice, and specialty areas such as women’s health care, pelvic wellness, aesthetics, and infertility. It reviews abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB). Any uterine bleeding that occurs outside of the normal menstrual parameters for duration of bleeding, amount of flow, cycle length and timing is considered AUB. The Fédération Internationale de Gynécologie et d’Obstétrique (FIGO) classification system guides clinical evaluation and diagnosis for AUB. The workgroup also recommended retiring the terms menorrhagia, metrorrhagia, and dysfunctional uterine bleeding. Prevalence is difficult to estimate accurately due to the variations in nomenclature used for AUB. The incidence of abnormal bleeding is increased during adolescence and perimenopause. AUB is correlated with poorer physical and mental health-related quality of life. AUB accounts for approximately two thirds of all hysterectomies.
