The principal investigator or program director, are involved in the budgeting process, one would not know whether to perform all of the activities with the money requested, or whether the distribution of funds over budget periods is appropriate for the project. Begin with start-up activities such as hiring, training, copying/preparing materials, and informing sites that have agreed to participate; then move on to activities such as recruitment, data collection, intervention, data entry and cleaning, analysis, and report/article writing. For smaller National Institutes of Health (NIH) research budgets, the NIH uses what is called a “modular budget.” Career Development Awards (CDAs) are great ways to get the training one needs and to get the research started, so hopefully the institution will support the CDA efforts, especially if one plan to follow up with further proposal funding at the same institution.
