3: Compassion and Contentment: Being Heartful and Happy at Work

Abstract

Compassion is considered to be a human emotion; however, it is also labeled a virtue, a good feature or desirable quality of people. When linked with happiness or contentment, the actualizing of human potential is frequently referred to as self-actualization. There is a long list of attributes for self-actualizing individuals, the most important of which is that they have an almost intuitive kind of feeling of oneness with the rest of the world. Work satisfaction comes about by meeting individual personal goals and feeling like we have accomplished something meaningful. In the case of nursing, work productivity basically means being able to provide quality care to the patients. The nurse who can connect with her patients and not feel as if she is a robot is more likely to go home at the end of the day feeling heartful and more content.
