Children with special needs are now, and forever will be, entering the building through the front door, up the ramp, or any way they can. Federal laws have made this a reality, and it is the job of school nurses to help these children succeed. This chapter helps the school nurse learn the definitions of impairment, disability, handicap, special needs, and the history of special education in the United States. It presents the general provisions of, and major differences between, the Americans With Disabilities Act and the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act. Also covered are the components of individualized healthcare and emergency healthcare plans, the role of the Child Study Team, and the importance of demonstrating knowledge and compassion for children with special needs.
