Mental Health Issues in Newcomer Communities

    Chapter

This chapter examines the psychological and mental health consequences of migration on immigrants and refugees. The chapter details how the events which forced the migration, the flight itself, and the marginalization in the host country result in triple trauma. The chapter then provides strategies to support immigrant communities in their journey toward resiliency. Some key approaches in treatment and practice include considering individuals’ culture and values, in determining the most effective methods of therapy and intervention for trauma-impacted individuals.

Vulnerabilities, Abuse, and Psychosocial Disparities of Women With Disabilities

    Chapter

The purpose of this chapter is to discuss issues of abuse, vulnerabilities, and intimate partner violence (IPV) for women with disabilities; the psychosocial disparities that these create; and the influence of intersectionality. Psychosocial disparities related to physical and mental health consequences; barriers to intervention and escape from IPV; and other positionalities of type of disability, race, sexual orientation, employment, rurality, and immigration status are presented. Evidence-based counseling approaches and the importance of cultural competence are also discussed. Resources and suggested additional readings are provided.

The Impact of Social Media Influence on Mental Health

    Chapter

This chapter emphasizes the role social media and other technologies play in current societal cultures. It discusses the nature of social networking sites, their exponential growth, and different uses for diverse platforms. Further, this chapter also discusses new terminology, the benefits of a global digital community, and the concerns that go hand-in-hand with such integrations considering person-specific susceptibilities. The authors discuss current mental health concerns, life after the COVID-19 pandemic, and interventions and implications of social media specifically for vulnerable populations including women and underrepresented populations. Lastly, the roles of both clinicians and rehabilitation professionals in facilitating understanding and moderation with such growing technologies are also presented.

The Impact of Social Determinants of Health on the Identification and Outcomes of Depression in Primary Care

    Article

Social determinants of health (SDOH) may significantly impact treatment outcomes for depression in primary care. An analysis of patients in collaborative care was conducted to explore the association between SDOH and depression baseline scores and treatment outcomes as assessed by the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ9). Although individuals’ baseline PHQ9 scores did not differ by SDOH flag, there was a direct effect of SDOH on PHQ9 reduction rates. SDOH did not significantly moderate the association between collaborative care treatment and depression outcomes. Individuals flagged with SDOH showed higher depression scores at the end of the treatment despite a higher clinical dosage. Routine screening for SDOH in collaborative care and primary care should be further explored.

Polyvictimization and Academic Performance: Findings From a National-Level Study of College Students

    Article

Research on polyvictimization (i.e., experiencing multiple types of victimization) suggests that its effects are diverse and may be more severe than the effects of single-type victimization. Few studies have focused on polyvictimization among college students and how its experience may shape academic life. Thus, this study examines how polyvictimization (i.e., sexual, violent, and stalking—in the last 12 months) among college students relates to academic performance. Participants (N = 67,972) were drawn from the Spring 2019 administration of the American College Health Association’s National College Health Assessment II. Findings show that polyvictims’ grade point averages are lower than nonpolyvictims and polyvictims have higher odds of having their academic performance suffer connected to a variety of factors (mental health, physical health, and substance use). Students who experienced three types of victimization (compared to fewer) had the highest odds of having their academic performance harmed. These findings suggest extra attention be paid to polyvictimization as it relates to factors that shape academic performance.

It Is Time to Replace the DSM: A Critical Review of Social Work and the Biomedical Model of Practice

    Article

Statistics indicate social workers comprise most of the mental health workforce in the United States. Social workers also abide by the profession’s code of ethics, comprising ethical principles and standards. Psychiatric disorders are predicated on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Psychiatric disorders are ubiquitous, notably in the realm of mental health to help individuals gain access to services and for insurance reimbursement purposes. However, the development of the DSM and diagnoses are not without significant controversy, forcibly placing social workers in a role of practicing in unethical ways, contributing to oppressive practices and social problems.

Career and Mental Health: Total Wellness

    Chapter

Career counseling falls under the large umbrella of mental health, yet news of mental health appears to be covered only as part of public outcry or displeasure when a tragedy or injustice occurs. Much less attention is given to everyday people dealing with daily life stressors, inadequate support, and improper coping skills. The relationship between career and mental health counseling is not new. To succeed in proper development, each individual should have access to proper career counseling. The field of career counseling is an ever-evolving area of the counseling profession with challenges that require constant adaptation and processing. In fact, counseling as a profession is rooted and originated from the career and vocational guidance movement. The counseling profession began when Frank Parsons began outlining a process for choosing a career, stating that choosing a career is more than simply deciding what one wants to do to earn a living.

Counseling Individuals With Co-Occurring Addictive and Mental Disorders:
    A Comprehensive Approach

    Book

This book is intended for graduate students pursuing careers as professional counselors in a variety of settings, including healthcare agencies and treatment facilities. All counselors, regardless of specialty or work environment, are likely to encounter clients who have a co-occurring mental and substance use disorder. The book is also useful for experienced counselors who did not receive comprehensive education during their training program but now work with clients who have co-occurring disorders (CODs). The focus on the counseling profession is unique to this book. Both the editors and the majority of the contributing authors are all professional counselors, many of whom are counselor educators and clinical supervisors, with direct care experience working with people who have CODs. Being rooted in the counseling profession provides a holistic, wellness perspective that is frequently lacking in books on CODs written primarily by professionals with medical degrees or other behavioral health backgrounds. Each chapter is purposefully written with the reader’s education in mind. To begin, each chapter lists the learning objectives, which indicate what the reader should be able to accomplish after thoroughly reviewing the material. The focus of the chapter content is on assisting readers in understanding what this means for their future work as counselors. This is especially evident in the case illustration and discussion sections, where readers are exposed to a clinical situation and then see how a clinical professional counselor would handle it. Each chapter concludes with suggested discussion questions, designed to help readers expand on the content of the chapters, use critical thinking skills, and, if done in dyads or groups, learn the art of consultation and collaboration with peers.

Culturally Responsive Counseling for Clients of the Gamer Culture, Fandoms, and Related Subcultures

    Chapter

“Gamer culture” has often been described by those who study it in simple terms, applying the descriptor “gamers” to those who play video games as a part of their leisure activities (Shaw, 2010). “Game[r] culture, in both press and academic discourses, is framed by descriptions of who plays, what they play, and how they play” (Shaw, 2010, p. 12). Within the study of Gamer Culture is the need to understand the “gamer” and “player” as interpersonal and social identities within their own unique and shifting context of the broader world (Grooten & Kowert, 2015; Paaßen et al., 2017; Shaw, 2010, 2012). In addition to gaming, other elements of popular culture can be highly influential in how we define our self-concept, sometimes persistently and other times fleetingly, but with no less influence over how an individual defines their cultural identity. As with gaming, fandoms and related subcultures require examination as a unique element of cultural identity (Peeples et al., 2018). Fandoms and related subcultures are self-selected groups based on “media property, such as a book, comic book, or television show” (Peeples et al., 2018, para. 1), which can highly influence self-concept and expression of cultural identity.
