Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a multidimensional problem that requires interdisciplinary interventions and unfortunately has been overlooked for the older adult population. IPV is a multifaceted and complex problem at the intersection of elder abuse (EA; e.g., commonly concerning the neglect and abuse of fragile and dependent elders) and domestic violence (e.g., commonly concerning younger victims and families/relationships). There is a critical need for practitioners in both fields to better understand and address this problem. This chapter presents and analyzes situations that were reported as alleged EA to Adult Protective Services programs in various states. All were confirmed as EA following investigations. The goals are (a) to illustrate abuse and clinical dynamics of cases that constitute both EA and IPV, and (b) to illuminate the public health implications of EA cases that involve IPV affecting older adults.
