Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) need routine treatment and monitoring by a neurologist with experience in MS. Despite well-known barriers, education on wellness, preventive medical care, and lifestyle optimization is extremely important for people with MS, and strong efforts should be made to ensure it is provided. These healthy lifestyle practices, including diet, physical activity, weight control, stress reduction, and tobacco discontinuation, are aimed at lowering the risk of developing chronic diseases and serve as an adjunct treatment for those chronic diseases already present. Comorbidities worsen long-term outcomes in MS patients; therefore, early and persistent healthy lifestyle practices in MS may effect long-lasting changes in the level of disability. This chapter summarizes recommended wellness interventions. In individuals with MS, health promotion has been shown to improve employment, physical conditioning and strength, quality of life, and even to lessen the severity of MS. The chapter discusses specific health-promoting behaviors.
