This chapter helps us to understand common legal issues in academia, including those related to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), to understand Title IX, academic freedom, academic dishonesty, and professionalism and to manage litigation, public relations, and potential lawsuits. Health professions programs involve a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students who may present many legal challenges to an institution. In order to successfully teach within an institution of higher education, it is essential that health professions educators have not only a mastery of the subject matter, but also a firm understanding of the various laws within this complex system that regulates education. Common legal challenges include cheating and plagiarism, professionalism, academic dishonesty and academic freedom, diversity, inclusion, and equity. Higher education attorneys provide effective counsel and can help individual faculty in the understanding of legal issues surrounding academia.
