Leaders evolve through a series of stages, and their development needs vary by stage. Understanding one’s development needs at each stage, as well as the tools and techniques to address those needs, can help leaders maximize their full potential. This chapter covers a broad range of leadership approaches, skills, models, and contexts, which will provide students with both the concepts and the ability to apply those concepts in practice. It presents development strategies for each of the four stages in the evolution of a leader, organized into six leadership development domains. Those development strategies specifically incorporate and reference the other material contained in this textbook. The chapter helps the reader to understand the various stages of leadership and the development needs at each leadership stage. It identifies the hallmarks of each leadership stage and creates and applies stage-specific development strategies.
