Medical Imaging for the Health Care Provider, 2nd Edition:
    Practical Radiograph Interpretation

    Book

The author wrote this book as she needed to teach classes to nurse practitioner students in medical imaging and interpretation. This book helps one to understand the dynamics of the five testing modalities and approaches to interpretation of radiographs. It can be useful to all health care providers, whether students or practicing providers, in a wide range of clinical settings. The book intends to provide a concise, easy-to-use reference that introduces the reader to differences in medical imaging testing modalities and teaches the basics of plain radiograph interpretation. It is designed to assist providers in identifying and understanding the various medical imaging testing modalities of radiographs, computed tomography, nuclear imaging, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasound scans and images. The book presents written descriptions of the various modalities that are enhanced with figures, tables, and actual patient films. The text demonstrates concepts and discusses in clearly presented language the various attributes of the range of testing modalities and how to interpret them. This approach helps to deepen the practitioner’s understanding of the differences in the modalities, along with a deeper appreciation for the parameters of these tests and supports appropriate utilization of these diagnostic tools when diagnosing patients. This book is divided into four units. The first unit introduces the reader to the history of medical imaging and gives an overview of radiology and each testing modality. Units II through IV cover interpretation of plain radiographs of the chest, abdomen, extremities, and spine. Age-appropriate considerations are included throughout the book, as is the importance of the clinical decision-making process. Interpretation of plain radiographs can be challenging and frustrating for any provider. Whether one is reading a radiology report or interpreting radiographs, this important resource will help build one’s confidence in their ability to read and interpret radiographs.

    Androgen Deprivation Therapy, 3rd Edition:
An Essential Guide for Prostate Cancer Patients and Their Loved Ones

    Book

Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT, often called hormone therapy) is a common treatment for prostate cancer, but it has a wide range of side effects. This book presents techniques to minimize the burden from those side effects. Most physicians who prescribe ADT warn patients about the most serious effects, but do not have the time to discuss all of the side effects that a patient might experience. This book will help to fill in what may not get covered in the clinic when a physician tells a patient, “I recommend that you start on hormone therapy”. It is structured as a workbook, which means that it includes not just information but also exercises. The book covers not only the physical side effects of ADT but the psychological side effects that can alter how one feels and how one interacts with loved ones. Importantly, it recognizes that ADT impacts not just patients, but also their partners and others close to them. Some sections are appropriate for all loved ones; others are specifically for sexual partners. For the book to be most effective for couples, both patients and partners need to read the book and to explore together the questions and exercises at the end of each chapter. Questions at the end of each section are designed to help one think about how this information applies and facilitates communication with one’s loved ones. Some questions specifically address couples; others are appropriate for individuals, or for patients who are dating or hope to date in the future. A major change in this edition is the expansion of discussion on the drugs used for ADT and how they are used in combinations with other medications. This testifies to the many advances in treating patients on ADT that have improved since we first began studying ADT.

Advanced Health Assessment of Women, 5th Edition:
    Skills, Procedures, and Management

    Book

This fifth edition offers a comprehensive, user friendly, clinically focused resource for busy clinicians, advanced practice students, and faculty. Previous editions focused on the assessment of women and related women’s health skills and procedures. This book continues to provide updated skills and procedures, along with enhanced tables and figures, to help clearly describe these basic and advanced skills. Responding to reader requests, chapters now include (if appropriate) management/pharmacology summary charts and case studies. The book expanded into management of various women’s health conditions, the need to include additional topics became apparent. This led to fourteen new chapters written by content experts. These chapters include telehealth in women’s health; vaginal infections and vaginal microscopy; mental health screening; preconception care; complementary and alternative medical therapies; adolescent health; lactation assessment and management; female veterans; male sexual and reproductive health; amenorrhea; premenstrual syndrome/premenstrual dysphoric disorder; sexual health and related problems; human trafficking; and the contraceptive consult. All chapters have been updated and expanded to reflect current research, evidence-based clinical guidelines, and new technologies. The book begins with a comprehensive review of the basic anatomy and physiology of women/persons with a vagina. A complete under-standing of the complexities of the menstrual cycle and normal vaginal flora, examined at the cellular level, is imperative for accurate understanding and diagnoses of conditions that affect this community. The book offers practical guidance to help advanced practice students, preceptors, faculty, and clinicians. The content reflects an extensive review of current literature integrated with our authors’ extensive years of clinical experience and teaching. In addition, it welcomes expanded panel of advanced practice clinicians from a wide variety of women’s health specialties who have generously shared their expertise as contributing authors and reviewers.

    Gynecologic Oncology Handbook, 3rd Edition:
    An Evidence-Based Clinical Guide

    Book

This handbook is structured to provide comprehensive care for the gynecologic cancer patient. It is directed toward clinicians at all levels of training and the chapters are tiered in this fashion. It outlines the basic diagnosis, workup, staging, and treatment. The book recommends specific surgical and adjuvant therapies that reflect the most current standards of care. Finally, it summarizes the evidence-based medicine in support of recommended treatments. Thus, the medical student can have a dedicated overview, the resident can refer to directed patient-care protocols, and the fellow and practicing physician can support their clinical decisions with easily accessible literature. The updated third edition furthers the content to include the latest cancer-screening information, new surgical technology and platforms, novel cytotoxic chemotherapy, in addition to targeted and immunotherapy treatments, vaccination information, and the most current clinical trial outcomes. The ninth edition AJCC staging guidelines have also been incorporated, providing accurate instructions for staging to keep the reader at the forefront of medicine. With this additional information, the authors continue to provide a comprehensive and contemporary reference for clinical practice. This book again acknowledges the dedication it has taken from the physicians, support staff, and especially our patients, to design and participate in the trials that have advanced the knowledge of these difficult gynecologic cancers. The authors hope the information provided herein can continue to guide high-quality care and reflect the commitment to the subspecialty.

  • Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Pocketpedia, 4th Edition Go to book: Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Pocketpedia

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Pocketpedia, 4th Edition

    Book

Physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) is the medical specialty that focuses on the diagnoses, evaluation, and management of persons of all ages with congenital or acquired physical and/or cognitive impairments, disabilities, and functional limitations. The specialty began in the late 1920s and was recognized by the American Medical Association in 1945. PM&R physicians, also known as physiatrists, have expertise and knowledge about the biomechanics of the human body and an extensive understanding and training on how mobility can impact quality of life. Physiatrists treat persons with a broad range of medical diagnoses related to illness, injury, or physical impairment using nonsurgical techniques. As experts in physical examination, physiatrist can design a unique treatment plan tailored to an individual’s physical impairments, goals, and needs. Treatment goals can include restoration of function, but may also be supportive, accommodative, or through adaptive means. The fourth edition of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Pocketpedia outlines the common conditions that PM&R physicians come across in their current clinical practice. It is a collaboration of over 60 content expert chapter authors, and each submission was streamlined to create a concise yet thoughtful chapter for each topic. It includes several new chapters, including COVID-19 rehabilitation, transplant rehabilitation, caring for patients with disability, orthotics/adaptive equipment, and pelvic health, which demonstrates the breadth of expertise within the field of PM&R. To make the book easier to navigate, the authors have significantly expanded the coverage of musculoskeletal rehabilitation and divided it into topic-specific sections. The book serves as a convenient and succinct resource for ongoing education and clinical practice in this field.
