Behavioral Pediatric Healthcare for Nurse Practitioners:
A Growth and Developmental Approach to Intercepting Abnormal Behaviors

    Book

This book uses a developmental approach to behavioral health for the entire pediatric population. Each section of this book is dedicated to the traditional developmental ages. Each opening chapter within the specific developmental age provides information for pediatric primary care providers to assess, identify, and intercept potential behavioral health problems through the use of a developmental approach to behavioral health assessments (infants, toddlers, preschool-age children, school-age children, and adolescents,). Assessment, screening, intervention, and treatment strategies are provided through analysis of the best available evidence by experts in the field of pediatric practice. Cutting-edge topics written by experts in the fields of pediatric primary care and pediatric behavioral health are highlighted in this book and include: infant brain development and outcomes from ineffective parenting; social determinants of health and effect on behavioral health; building resiliency in children; infant depression; behavioral problems in children with inborn errors of metabolism; autism, global developmental delays, and genetic syndromes; attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and comorbidities. The topics also include bullying social media and behavioral health; eating disorders; the autistic adolescent in residential treatment facilities; child behaviors within military families; foster care; toxic stress; trauma-informed care; lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender adolescent; and holistic and integrative care, and holistic care, integrative medicine, and behavioral health. Within each developmental section, there are case studies that provide exemplary practices for assessing, diagnosing, and evaluating children presented with the particular behavioral health problem. Case studies include the following topics: failure to thrive in infancy; infant colic; toilet training; sleep disorders in children with autistic spectrum disorder and ADHD; toddler impulsive behaviors; nail biting; and adolescent substance abuse.

  • Trauma-Informed Care in the NICU Go to book: Trauma-Informed Care in the NICU

    Trauma-Informed Care in the NICU:
Evidence-Based Practice Guidelines for Neonatal Clinicians

    Book

The concept of trauma-informed care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) aligns with the mission of transdisciplinary neonatal colleagues around the world. This book provides the steps to adopt and implement a trauma-informed paradigm in their NICU. Part I of the book reviews trauma and trauma-informed care and evidence-based updates to the core measures for age-appropriate care. Core measures for age-appropriate care in the NICU define measurable, evidence-based best practices in developmentally supportive, whole-person care. Integrating the concept of trauma-informed care operationalized by the core measures for age-appropriate care in the NICU meets the developmentally sensitive and critical needs of the hospitalized infant, and aims to restore health through healing relationships and integrative care. Part II discusses each core measure set, providing updated evidence-based research to substantiate the practice recommendations, and includes practical implementation strategies and resources to support success. This part presents guidelines for the healing environment; guidelines for the family as well as for pain and stress prevention, assessment and management; guidelines for protected sleep including discussions on safe sleep environment and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS); guidelines for the activities of infants’ daily living; and guidelines for family collaborative care while explaining the correlation between acute stress disorder (ASD) symptoms in NICU parents and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. Part III addresses the topic of trauma and the neonatal clinician’s experience with guidelines and recommendations to support and promote self-care for the clinicians.

  • Nursing Care of Adoption and Kinship Families Go to book: Nursing Care of Adoption and Kinship Families

Nursing Care of Adoption and Kinship Families:
A Clinical Guide for Advanced Practice Nurses

    Book

This book on nursing care of adoption and kinship families begins with a chapter, which focuses on the historical, cultural, and legal landscape that has shaped adoption and kinship care in the United States and describes the types of adoption, trends in adoption, and processes involved in adopting a child. This is followed by a discussion highlighting the common health care needs of both adoptive and kinship children. Some birth parents do not voluntarily release parental rights of their children and experience grief and postpartum depression after relinquishing a baby. Parental postadoption depression (PAD) should be screened for by advanced practice nurses (APNs) to optimize parental functioning and avoid negative outcomes. The book discusses the broader issues like maltreatment of children, educational and social issues, and transracial adoption, and the outcomes of children adopted by same-sex individuals. It explores the role and needs of kinship parents, a unique, vulnerable, diverse population with health risk factors compounded by the responsibilities of raising children as older adults. Complex and diverse relationships exist among birth parents, their children, and the kinship caregivers who have stepped in as surrogate parents. Children under the care of kin experience maltreatment and traumatic events. The book also provides an overview of systems and practices that surround adoption and kinship triads.

  • Neonatal Nursing Care Handbook, 3rd Edition Go to book: Neonatal Nursing Care Handbook

Neonatal Nursing Care Handbook, 3rd Edition:
An Evidence-Based Approach to Conditions and Procedures

    Book

The health of newborns in all countries must be at the forefront of all activities (teaching, research, and service) if neonatal nursing is to embrace health for all and end preventable deaths of newborns globally by 2030. Neonatal nurses face an ever-changing practice landscape that requires swift decisions and actions. This book goes beyond providing an explanation of common conditions and procedures that are widely implemented in practice. It provides information on trauma informed care recognizing the role of toxic stress in the trajectory of health across the lifespan of the newborn, the mother, and the family. Evidence-informed practice improves patient outcomes and sharing knowledge about best practices (i.e., current state of evidence) is an important step in this regard. The book is a quick reference for nurses who care for the small and sick newborn. It addresses the most common conditions and procedures. The material is offered in an easy to use format and is meant to be a quick reference not a comprehensive one. It can be used by anyone providing care to this population. A systems approach is used in section I. Section II highlights special care considerations, and the final Section, III presents the common procedures, diagnostic tests, and lab values. The appendices house additional material on weights and temperatures, common abbreviations, and web resources. In this third edition, all chapters have been updated to reflect new evidence for neonatal nursing care. Additions include oral/nasogastric tube feedings, bottle feedings, high frequency ventilation and new ventilation techniques. There is a new section on neonatal abstinence syndrome and neonatal opioid withdrawal. The book can be used internationally to provide evidence based practice for consistent high-quality care in order to improve neonatal outcomes.

  • Guided Participation in Pediatric Nursing Practice Go to book: Guided Participation in Pediatric Nursing Practice

Guided Participation in Pediatric Nursing Practice:
Relationship-Based Teaching and Learning With Parents, Children, and Adolescents

    Book

A central activity of the nursing care process is observation and incorporation of the child’s behavioral expression of strengths, limitations, and achievements as well as physical, emotional, and developmental challenges. This book describes the critical nature of clinician–parent relationships as clinicians care for children who are ill or healthy and in need of health promotional and illness prevention care; hence, the content is appropriate for all clinicians. Guided participation (GP) draws on, articulates with, and utilizes the theoretical perspectives of many disciplines, including cultural and educational anthropology, education science, communication science, and the science of relationships. The book offers a systematic, principled, and dynamic approach that engages with the child and family in ways that support the parent’s development of health- and complex-care competence. It shows how shared attention and understanding between clinician and parent can enable joint problem solving and activities that lead to parent confidence and competence in health-related tasks. The book is organized into four sections comprising 24 chapters. The first section discusses the underpinnings of guided participation in nursing. The second section describes guided participation from the perinatal period through infancy. The last two sections explore guided participation in caring for children with acute and chronic conditions, and in mental and behavioral health of children and families. To make the content on GP and the associated theoretical perspectives easily comprehensible, the book uses case examples of conditions that pose care challenges, such as extreme prematurity, congenital heart disease, technological dependence, cancer, and seizure disorder. It illustrates how complex communication and reflection processes help parents and clinicians make shared treatment decisions that reflect both clinical realities and family values.

  • Care Coordination in the NICU Go to book: Care Coordination in the NICU

    Care Coordination in the NICU:
Implementing Family-Centered Nursing Care for Optimal Outcomes

    Book

This book provides education, tools, and support for caregivers who care for high-risk maternal and neonatal patients so that they too can learn how to effectively and successfully provide high quality care coordination and family-centered care to patients and families in their daily care practice. It looks at the high-risk antepartum patient stay, the high-risk delivery, the NICU admission, the NICU journey, discharge home, special situations in the NICU, palliative and bereavement in the perinatal and neonatal period, and caring for the caregiver. Each chapter focuses on one of these areas and provides real examples of care situations, positive care coordination efforts, and exceptional psychosocial support that were provided to patients and families. One may even come across a few examples of where care coordination and psychosocial support did not go as well as it could have. Eighteen families have shared their very personal stories and experiences to increase the depth of the book and their words have not been altered. The book is intended primarily for the nursing and nurse practitioner audience. It is organized into six parts comprising 16 chapters. The first part presents an overview of nursing history, care coordination, and family-centered care. The second part discusses supporting patients in high-risk pregnancy and delivery. The third part deals with supporting patients and families in the NICU. The fourth part provides description on supporting patients with special challenges in the NICU. The fifth part talks about bereavement and palliative care support. The final part discusses therapeutic strategies for caregivers and patients.

  • Study Guide to Accompany Advanced Pediatric Assessment, 3rd Edition Go to book: Study Guide to Accompany Advanced Pediatric Assessment

Study Guide to Accompany Advanced Pediatric Assessment, 3rd Edition:
A Case Study and Critical Thinking Review

    Book

The purpose of this third edition is to assist the student or novice pediatric healthcare provider in solidifying the specialized knowledge and skills that are required when conducting the pediatric history and physical examination. Designed to accompany the text Advanced Pediatric Assessment, the study guide reinforces essential content through case studies and multiple choice Q&As that mirror the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Certification Exam format. Each chapter of this study guide aligns with the corresponding textbook chapter and follows a uniform format: a chapter overview, expected learning outcomes for the chapter, essential terminology, and critical thinking exercises-many new to this edition-in two formats: short answer, and case study. The chapters then continue with certification exam-style multiple choice questions (with answers), new to this edition, and blank sample documentation to show examples of subjective and objective findings that are necessary to record. It is important for all healthcare providers to be sure that children receive the highest quality care possible, as their young bodies and minds are growing and developing. The book is structured into four units. Unit I present the foundations of child health assessment. Unit II discusses gathering of subjective and objective data from pediatric health history and physical examination. Unit III describes assessment of mental disorders in children and adolescents and assessment of child abuse and neglect. The final unit synthesizes the components of the pediatric health assessment. The author hopes that this study guide will help to augment the student’s learning, and increase the learner’s confidence in providing comprehensive, high quality care to children of all ages.

  • NASPAG’s Protocols for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Go to book: NASPAG’s Protocols for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology

NASPAG’s Protocols for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology:
    A Ready-Reference Guide for Nurses

    Book

This Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (PAG) nurse triage book is the first of its kind because it will serve as a guide to assist nurses in efficiently addressing common patient concerns in this population. Nurses serve as the first line of communication with patients and families via telephone and computerized messaging and are required to triage a wide variety of gynecologic medical questions and concerns. This triage guide has been thoughtfully constructed to approach problems from the nursing perspective. It follows a targeted format that allows nurses to easily find and scan information on common concerns faced in this patient population. The conditions and treatment plans in this younger population differ from adult gynecologic patients, which highlight the importance of a specialized triage guide. This guidebook differs from all other nursing resources currently available because it is the first text to focus on the specialized field of PAG. It addresses a multitude of commonly asked PAG patient questions and chief complaints, including acute and chronic symptoms and commonly prescribed medication side effects and use instructions. This book assists decision-making for nurses as they approach triage concerns in this specialized patient population.
