Health Policy and Advanced Practice Nursing, 3rd Edition:
    Impact and Implications

    Book

The only policy text written specifically for APRN students, this preeminent resource delivers a sweeping examination of policy impact on the full implementation of the APRN role across all environments, including its effectiveness on specific patient populations. The expanded third edition–containing six new chapters–includes expanded information on policy analysis, nursing roles, and the impact of technology. It provides practical knowledge on developing policy to advocate for vulnerable populations–bolstered by case examples–and discusses how interprofessional education has changed and will continue to alter health policy in the United States and internationally. Additionally, the text discusses the evolving influence of the Patient Protection Affordable Care Act (PPACA) and the implications of current and future health policy changes as they affect APRN practice. New doctoral-level content adds to the book’s relevance for DNP students.

The text addresses the initiative within nursing for Full Practice Authority for all APRNs, which enables them to practice to the full extent of their educational preparation. Edited by experienced APRN leaders who have been closely involved with health policy development, the text meets the requirements of the IOM report on The Future of Nursing and the DNP criteria V for the inclusion of health policy and advocacy in the curriculum. This “call to action” for APRNs is specifically designed for courses serving a variety of APRN trajectories and includes content from all APRN role perspectives in every section.

Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nursing, 3rd Edition:
Integrating Psychotherapy, Psychopharmacology, and Complementary and Alternative Approaches Across the Life Span

    Book

Psychiatric-mental health advanced practice registered nurses (PMH-APRNs) are like water: they are flexible, they are fluid, and they go where they are needed. Deinstitutionalization of psychiatric patients resulted in not only more community-based treatment, but also new and expanded outpatient roles for psychiatric nurses. The third edition of Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nursing meets the practice standards developed by the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, the International Society of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses, and the American Nurses Association, which require all PMH-APRNs to have skills in psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, and holistic assessment. Each chapter reflects not only state-of-the-art knowledge, but decades of clinical wisdom. The book is divided into five sections: Section I provides an overview of the theoretical and evidence base for practice and an exploration of the concept of shared decision-making and reaching concordance between clinicians and clients. Section II explores the foundations necessary for the practitioner to implement integrated practice and discusses the synergistic effects of integrating practice concepts. This includes chapters presenting the overviews of psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, and complementary and alternative approaches in the context of the stages of treatment. A new chapter focuses on legal and ethical issues in treatment. Section III applies the information from previous chapters and focuses on integrative management of specific syndromes. The chapters discuss mood disorders, anxiety-related disorders, psychotic symptoms, sleep disturbances, disordered eating, disordered cognition, impulse control, disordered attention, self-directed injury, and other-directed violence. Section IV covers aspects of managing substance misuse, medical problems, pregnancy, telehealth, and forensic issues that often co-occur with psychiatric syndromes. A new chapter focuses on care for sexual and gender minority patients. Section V covers the importance of maintaining competence and quality in clinical practice. The section includes a new chapter on self-care among PMH-APRNs that focuses on resilience in practitioners, and the final chapter focuses on the global perspectives and the future of psychiatric-mental health advanced practice nursing.

Nursing Informatics for the Advanced Practice Nurse, 3rd Edition:
Patient Safety, Quality, Outcomes, and Interprofessionalism

    Book

The healthcare environment in which advanced practice registered nurses are currently practicing is a complex setting with rapid change underway driven by a need to transform the healthcare delivery system. The United States faces challenges with escalating healthcare delivery costs and questionable performance on many quality indicators for patient safety and overall population health. As an answer to these challenges, Health information technology (HIT) has been promoted as a critical element in the National Quality Strategy (NQS) to achieve three aims: better care, affordable care, and healthy populations and communities (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2011). More recently, a fourth aim has been added to include care of the provider within interprofessional teams. This fourth aim was added because HIT is creating undue stress and the burden of documentation associated with the Electronic Health Record (EHR), often resulting in burnout. Nurses will play an essential role within interprofessional teams in transforming the healthcare delivery system and are critical team members for success, particularly related to the effective and efficient deployment of HIT. In the last 10 years, the United States has focused on laying the HITEHR foundation established under the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act of 2009. Now, the United States is focused on optimizing the investments made on Health ITEHR implementations and to address unintended consequences that have resulted from the rapid deployment of I.T. across the nation. This book consists of five sections. Section one provides a brief introduction to nursing informatics. Section two briefs on point-of-care technology. Section three discusses data management and analytics. Section four details patient safety/quality and population health. Finally, section five describes new and emerging technologies and is intended to provide the advanced practice nurse with a view for the future of healthcare-based informatics.

  • Evaluation of Quality in Health Care for DNPs, 3rd Edition Go to book: Evaluation of Quality in Health Care for DNPs

Evaluation of Quality in Health Care for DNPs, 3rd Edition

    Book

This book provides a high-quality resource on evaluation for nurses. It addresses the special needs of Doctorate of Nursing Practice nurses to understand the principles of conducting large scale evaluations, and translating those principles into developing smaller projects, such as unit-based projects or projects required in DNP degree programs. Along with the higher expectations for DNP nurses come greater opportunities to lead evaluation teams and influence high-level decision making in all areas of health care. The book recognizes that the reader does not necessarily read a book from first chapter through the last. The intended audiences for this book are students enrolled in master and doctoral level programs, including advanced practice registered nurses (APRN) and DNP programs; DNP graduates and practicing APRNs; nurse administrators; directors of quality improvement; faculty teaching evaluation; and others interested in evaluation of health care from a practice and clinical perspective. The book provides an overview of the state of the science and knowledge of evaluation, and its application to common practice issues in which DNP, APRN, and master's prepared nurses lead and participate. Students, graduates, and colleagues provided information about their particular needs which was greatly appreciated. The intent of this book is to lay a foundation in evaluation for DNPs/APRNs to assume their important role in the process. Evaluation principles (concepts) as applied to health care continue to be underdeveloped and evolving. Evaluation is a nonlinear and messy process. While there is no one right way to conduct an evaluation, it is driven by the intended purpose and use of the evaluation findings.

  • Outcome Assessment in Advanced Practice Nursing, 5th Edition Go to book: Outcome Assessment in Advanced Practice Nursing

Outcome Assessment in Advanced Practice Nursing, 5th Edition

    Book

The value of advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) practice is found in their impact on health care quality, especially in “comparative effectiveness data” that documents APRN adherence to best care practices while achieving desired patient health and care system outcomes. Today, APRN care processes and health care outcomes form the basis for evaluating the educational preparation, individual provider and practice performance, policy initiatives that authorize APRN practice, and also serve an increasing role in reimbursement for services. APRNs serve at the front lines of health care and are expected to make even greater contributions in the future to improve the health care system. This is in part because they have developed a reputation for providing accessible, high-quality, cost-effective care. This book provides APRN students and educators, practicing APRNs, and the administrators with whom they work up-to-date information on the advanced practice nursing care process as well as patient health outcome, population health outcome and system-based outcome assessment—the who, what, when, where, how, and why. It includes critical perspectives on not only the health effects of advanced practice nursing but also the economic impact of the practice. Its chapters, which synthesize current data on each APRN role, will guide practice innovations and enhance practice authority. Content regarding identification of metrics, which will help APRNs quantify their impact, is especially relevant. Identified gaps in data will help one prioritize future research and develop new advanced practice nursing care models, which might lead to improvements in health and health care delivery. The authors provide the essential information to accomplish all of these important objectives. The true impact of advanced practice nursing care can be established only through continued focus on outcome assessment and evaluation—something that this book encourages readers to actively pursue.

Research for Advanced Practice Nurses, 4th Edition:
    From Evidence to Practice

    Book

The increasing focus on evidence needed for practice decisions propels us to re-envision how we teach graduate students about research and evidence-based practice (EBP). This book serves as a resource for graduate students and practicing advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) who contribute to the scholarly output in the discipline, particularly in the area of clinical practice. Increasing numbers of APRNs are prepared with a doctorate in nursing practice (DNP) degree. Collaborative teams, comprising APRNs prepared with master’s and doctoral degrees, can accelerate the translation of evidence into practice to improve health outcomes. Therefore, this book teaches APRNs prepared at the master’s and doctoral levels how to (a) find relevant and current evidence, (b) appraise the evidence, (c) translate evidence into practice to improve patient care and outcomes, and (d) disseminate findings. This book expands on the previous edition by providing a chapter on quality improvement (QI) models, processes, and tools; expanding Chapter 14 (systematic reviews) to include integrative and literature reviews; adding a chapter with exemplars of APRN-led initiatives that showcase improved processes and health outcomes. The book is organized into four parts. The chapters in Part I focus on an overview of EBP: the definitions of EBP that have evolved over time, types of evidence, and models of EBP. Components of the research process are presented from a reviewer’s perspective of using the article as supporting evidence for practice in subsequent chapters. Part III discusses meta-analyses, systematic reviews, integrative reviews, and practice guidelines from various sources, such as professional organizations and government websites, are other types of evidence that may be used in establishing EBP. Part IV discusses cost, outcomes, and ethical aspects are essential components of EBP and QI.

Handbook of Geropsychiatry for the Advanced Practice Nurse:
Mental Healthcare for the Older Adult

    Book

The ability to reduce the burden of illness among older adults is necessary as individuals are living longer and experiencing lower rates of disability. Advanced practice nurses are skilled to relieve the burden of illness among older adults through specialized training and providing treatment in a variety of clinical settings. While geriatric-focused content exists, advanced practice nurses can benefit from clinical pearls specific for the advanced practice nurse providing holistic mental health care. This handbook offers advanced practice nurses, nurse educators, and graduate nursing students a reference that is intended to be supplemental to uniquely providing care for older adults which includes an overview of the aging process as well as assessing and developing treatment plans for older adults with mental health disorders. As older adults often work collaboratively with family, friends, caregivers, and health care providers, approaches to such relationships are explored and intended to serve as a resource for providing mental health care that can contribute to the overall success of treatment. The text provides an interprofessional box that encourages and assists the advanced practice nurse navigating through interdisciplinary collaborative practice. Such interprofessional partnerships can enhance care—particularly in cases of complexity. Advanced practice nurses can utilize the provided case studies to identify and modify service delivery that promotes evidence based practice.

Psychotherapy for the Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurse, 3rd Edition:
    A How-To Guide for Evidence-Based Practice

    Book

Knowledge-driven evidence-based treatment models take time and effort but also must be provided by someone who is knowledgeable about the range of psychiatric mental health problems to be addressed. Dr. Wheeler is among a handful of people in the profession who offer an up-to-date evidence-based text of the knowledge and skills required by advanced practice psychiatric nurses. Since the publication of the first edition in 2008 of Psychotherapy for the Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurse a number of other books for advanced practice psychiatric nurses (APPNs) have been published and the number of graduate psychiatric nursing programs has steadily increased. This is a how-to compendium of evidence-based approaches to practicing psychotherapy for both the experienced and neophyte advanced practice psychiatric nurse. This book integrates neuroscience with relationship science and unites disparate psychotherapeutic approaches into a model that is concise and straightforward, yet sufficiently comprehensive to provide a framework for practice. The most useful therapeutic models are highlighted with principles, and techniques of treatment for nurse psychotherapists and those with prescriptive authority. This second edition expands the award-winning first edition, providing guidelines, forms, and case studies to assist APPNs in deciding which treatment to use based on psychotherapy outcome studies and practice guidelines. New chapters in the second edition includes: motivational interviewing; dialectical behavior therapy; group therapy; family therapy; eye movement desensitization and reprocessing; therapeutic approaches for addictions; and new current procedural terminology codes & reimbursement. Nurses who are healers understand that they can only accompany the patient on his or her journey if they have begun their own self-healing and that self-healing is a continuous process whereby one continues to develop clarity about one’s own strengths and weaknesses.
