Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Pocketpedia, 4th Edition

    Book

Physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) is the medical specialty that focuses on the diagnoses, evaluation, and management of persons of all ages with congenital or acquired physical and/or cognitive impairments, disabilities, and functional limitations. The specialty began in the late 1920s and was recognized by the American Medical Association in 1945. PM&R physicians, also known as physiatrists, have expertise and knowledge about the biomechanics of the human body and an extensive understanding and training on how mobility can impact quality of life. Physiatrists treat persons with a broad range of medical diagnoses related to illness, injury, or physical impairment using nonsurgical techniques. As experts in physical examination, physiatrist can design a unique treatment plan tailored to an individual’s physical impairments, goals, and needs. Treatment goals can include restoration of function, but may also be supportive, accommodative, or through adaptive means. The fourth edition of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Pocketpedia outlines the common conditions that PM&R physicians come across in their current clinical practice. It is a collaboration of over 60 content expert chapter authors, and each submission was streamlined to create a concise yet thoughtful chapter for each topic. It includes several new chapters, including COVID-19 rehabilitation, transplant rehabilitation, caring for patients with disability, orthotics/adaptive equipment, and pelvic health, which demonstrates the breadth of expertise within the field of PM&R. To make the book easier to navigate, the authors have significantly expanded the coverage of musculoskeletal rehabilitation and divided it into topic-specific sections. The book serves as a convenient and succinct resource for ongoing education and clinical practice in this field.

A Population Health Approach to Health Disparities for Nurses:
    Care of Vulnerable Populations

    Book

Distinguished by abundant patient and health provider narratives highlighting the impact of health disparities on health outcomes worldwide, A Population Health Approach to Health Disparities for Nurses is a scholarly yet practical text that prepares RN-BSN, DNP, and PhD students to work toward improving community health for a variety of underserved and vulnerable populations. Grounded in the population health approach addressed in the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials, it delivers practical steps nurses can take to address population health goals, including the improvement of quality of care, access to healthcare, outcomes, and cost management. Written by lawyers, physicians, social workers, statisticians and economists, psychologists, ethicists, finance experts, population health specialists, anthropologists, and nurses, the text emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach to learning and all components of healthcare—delivery of care, policy, research, and teaching. It examines demographic differences, chronic and acute health conditions, and the health needs of the unserved/underserved across the life cycle. It highlights the importance of understanding the social determinants of health and discusses ways to address health disparities through changes in public policy, attitudes, beliefs, education, research, and advocacy.

    Foundations of School Counseling:
    Innovation in Professional Practice

    Book

In this book, counselor educators contribute a data-driven foundation that includes years of experience in the field and research related to best practices. Current school counselors speak to how the work of school counselors often looks and feels in practice. K–12 students share how the interventions of school counselors have impacted their lives. In addition to ensuring intentionality with the voices present in this text, the authors focus on inclusion of issues that they feel are important to the profession. There is an entire chapter on LGBTQIA+ issues – a group that is often assigned a few pages within a chapter focused on diversity in schools. Additionally, the authors ensure that issues related to culturally relevant school counseling interventions and social justice advocacy are not only a stand-alone chapter of import but rather woven in a very present way throughout each chapter of the text. The book presents current issues that have impacted the field of education such as Anti-Racism and Virtual Counseling to acknowledge issues that have and will continue to impact our work as school counselors. Chapters include case studies and discussion questions to prompt students to apply covered content. The practical application portion of each text allow the instructors to provide guidance for future practicum and internship students regarding how to apply what they have learned. The online instructor’s manual includes a slide show that can be used as is or edited to include additional content per faculty discretion. The test bank portion includes multiple choice, true or false, and short answer questions and may be used for formative or evaluative purposes. Links to online resources to augment chapter content are included in the manual to allow for students to begin building a toolbox of useful resources available for use within the program and as new professionals.

Fast Facts for Patient Safety in Nursing:
How to Decrease Medical Errors and Improve Patient Outcomes

    Book

This book highlights the alarming statistics regarding medical errors and the most common causes. A thorough review of the literature identified the most significant errors and their causes. The significance of critical thinking, logic, and clinical judgment has been well established, and the book includes strategies for developing and improving these skills. It addresses case studies, exemplars, tips from the field, discussion questions, and special topics that support the integration and application of the important concepts. The book is structured and organized around two major units. Unit I addresses the severity of the issue and common causes. It provides an overview of the issue and the agencies that focus on patient safety. Despite numerous policy changes and strategies, patient errors have continued to increase after a previous improvement that stemmed from the initiatives after the landmark report To Err Is Human. Common medical errors include medication errors, patient falls, pressure ulcers, infections, and surgical errors. Unit I also describes the primary causes with poor communication being one of the most common causes. Unit II focuses on improving patient safety and decreasing adverse events. It focuses on ways to become a safe practitioner through education and competency development. It also highlights several theories that can be used to promote quality of care and decrease adverse outcomes. It then focuses on the significance of critical thinking in promoting patient outcomes and ways to develop and improve critical thinking and reasoning. The book focuses on prioritization and delegation and ways to develop these skills in addition to the scope of practice, intuition, and ethics. It focuses on leadership and emotional intelligence and finally focuses on the issue from a holistic approach and includes cultural humility and artificial intelligence.

The 3-Minute Musculoskeletal and Peripheral Nerve Exam, 2nd Edition

    Book

Countless physicians, medical students, and therapists can describe a similar experience at one time or another during their training: a patient is behind the door in an examination room and the daily schedule has the words “shoulder pain” listed as the chief complaint. Depending on one’s experience or comfort level, many questions may immediately flood one’s mind regarding how to approach the patient: What are the various causes of shoulder pain? Is the pain really coming from the shoulder? What structures are important in the shoulder? What aspects of the physical examination will help distinguish one shoulder problem from another? The physical examination of musculoskeletal and peripheral nervous system problems is essential knowledge for broad areas of healthcare, as these problems are among the leading reasons for medical encounters. This pocket reference offers instant access to a wide array of clinical pearls to guide the physical examination and diagnosis. Whether one can choose to keep the print copy handy or use the digital version on our phone or tablet, our answer is quickly within reach. In this updated and refreshed second edition, one can search by body part or suspected diagnosis and find detailed descriptions of physical examination maneuvers, along with associated evidence of sensitivity and specificity, to help us with our diagnosis. Additionally, the reader will find all new colorized illustrations, high-resolution photos demonstrating the maneuvers, and corresponding videos that bring the examination to life. Video icons throughout chapters indicate which tests include an accompanying video. There is no substitute for excellent physical diagnosis skills. The authors hope that one will find this book useful as one develop and fine-tune their skills in order to give patients the very best care.

Fast Facts About Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Nursing:
Building Competencies for an Antiracism Practice

    Book

This nursing handbook introduces and defines key terms about race and racism for nurses, nursing students, and nurse educators. It addresses how race and racism act as structural and core social determinants of health and propel health inequities. It moves beyond a focus on multicultural approaches for understanding inequity toward a recognition of the broader impact that both systemic and structural racism have had on inequality in health and life opportunities. Through a social justice lens, the book underscores how nurses, as frontline health professionals, need to understand racism as a factor behind these inequities and its significance to their working environment and nursing practice.

In concise chapters with brief paragraphs and bulleted information, this practical handbook offers strategies for how to productively engage in a dialogue about race and racism. It considers the history of racism in the United States and then breaks down how it operates at structural, institutional, and individual levels. Case studies illustrate such concepts as microaggressions, implicit bias, power, privilege, and intersectionality in order to foster understanding and provide opportunities for both self-reflection and collective conversation.

  • The Ultimate School Counselor’s Guide to Assessment & Data Collection Go to book: The Ultimate School Counselor’s Guide to Assessment & Data Collection

The Ultimate School Counselor’s Guide to Assessment & Data Collection

    Book

The first edition of this book has come to fruition out of the professional observations and experiences of the authors and those that they have supervised and trained. While counsellor preparation programs frequently require a course in counseling assessment, school counselors-intraining often report dissatisfaction in the relevance of what is covered, as the content is not focused on what school counselors actually see and use in practice. Prior to this book, no resource existed that focuses on the concept of assessment specifically for school counselors and provides them with formal and informal assessments that provide opportunities for data collection that, in turn, informs one’s data-driven, comprehensive school counseling programs (CSCP). Whether it be individual student data, school level data, school counseling program level data, or about the school counselors’ practices or beliefs, this professional resource offers a unique opportunity to meet the call from school counseling professionals to have guidance and access to instruments that focus on multiple levels of data. The book bridges the gap in knowledge and skills to allow school counselors to carry out their critical work in advocating for student success every day, based upon data. From this resource, the authors hope readers will gain the necessary attitudes, knowledge, and skills that are required to be a data-inspired and data-driven school counselor who serves as a leader and agent of change as a part of the development and implementation of a comprehensive school counseling program. One of the most salient and unique features of this book is that it offers readers with actual assessments that could be immediately implemented in one's school. The intended audience for this book is school counselors-in-training, practicing school counselors, those who serve in a district-level supervisory or coordinator position, as well as school counselor educators.

  • Career and College Readiness Counseling in P–12 Schools, 3rd Edition Go to book: Career and College Readiness Counseling in P–12 Schools

Career and College Readiness Counseling in P–12 Schools, 3rd Edition

    Book

This third edition provides a review of developmental, ecosystemic, and career theories to inform relevant P–12 career and college readiness interventions. It reviews numerous developmental theories and assists readers in using them as a foundation to design sequential and developmentally appropriate career and college readiness curricula and interventions. The book help readers understand the ecosystemic influences (e.g., family, school, community, society) on career development and college readiness, and discusses both why it is important to involve various stakeholders in career and college readiness initiatives and how to involve them. It starts with six foundational chapters in which it reviews (a) current data and issues related to college and career readiness, (b) information to assist with postsecondary planning and career and college advising, (c) professional preparation standards for individuals who will provide career and college readiness interventions, (d) cultural considerations in career and college readiness, (e) career and college readiness assessment, and (f) career and college readiness curriculum development. It addresses career development and college readiness needs by grade level. The focus in each grade level chapter is to identify common tasks that occur at that level and to help readers apply knowledge of ecosystems, developmental theories, and career theories, and identify ways that multiple stakeholders can become involved in career and college readiness interventions. This third edition has been revised and includes: updated workforce statistics; work-based learning opportunities for secondary students; the impact of social media on student development; career and technical education pathways; gap year information; enhanced instructor's manual, including project-based activities, discussion prompts, and related online activities, games, and apps. This book helps both preserves and practicing school counselors to identify career and college readiness needs and design developmentally appropriate interventions that are grounded in theory and research.

    Pediatric Neurology:
    Clinical Assessment and Management

    Book

The complexity of current practice in pediatric neurology can be daunting to individuals who are new to the field. Within the last several years, clinical neuroscience has progressed at a staggering pace with more and more sophisticated brain imaging and physiological monitoring techniques, a deeper understanding of the genetics and molecular mechanisms of many diseases, and increasingly specific treatment options for many disorders. We are now able to effectively diagnose and treat many diseases that until recently would have been beyond our reach. Such exciting developments call for an accessible review of this complex topic. Pediatric Neurology: Clinical Assessment and Management is designed for trainees and nonspecialists looking for concise and targeted information on diagnosis and treatment of neurological conditions in children. The book provides an introduction to clinical pediatric neurology and neuroscience with chapters written by pediatric neurologists from top national institutions, many of whom have made major contributions to the development of the field. The chapters emphasize key information and patient care concepts for novice learners to provide a broad window on the primary neurological disorders of children and current approaches to recognition and management. This book is not intended to be a comprehensive text, but rather a starting point for individuals who wish to delve into this exciting area and for practitioners in other disciplines who need to know basic concepts.

  • A Practical Approach to Movement Disorders, 3rd Edition Go to book: A Practical Approach to Movement Disorders

A Practical Approach to Movement Disorders, 3rd Edition:
    Diagnosis and Management

    Book

While there are several comprehensive textbooks on movement disorders, all are lengthy, thick, hardbound books and thus are less useful for the busy, practicing clinician who often needs a quick guide on the diagnostic approach and therapy for various movement disorders. There are a few practical, therapeutic handbooks on Parkinson disease but there are none for other types of movement disorders (chorea, dystonia, myoclonus, ataxia, etc). The ever busy clinician will also benefit from a “primer” on DBS—its new device types, indications, identification of ideal and non-ideal candidates, and trouble-shooting. This third edition is a practical yet authoritative guide to the diagnosis and work up, and the pharmacological, non-pharmacological and surgical treatments of all types of movement disorders for the clinician-intraining and the practicing clinician. The authors used an “expanded outline bullet point” format, with liberal use of flow charts, algorithms and tables, with emphasis on clinical presentation, work-up and management, rather than pathophysiology and disease mechanism. In summary, this book should provide a comprehensive and practical approach to the neurological, behavioral, and surgical treatment of movement disorders. Because the authors anticipate that clinicians may be reading this book comprehensively, from start to finish; or, using it “on demand” by quickly surveying specific chapters related to the phenomenology of a challenging patient—content overlap has been intentional, to emphasize concepts and principles in diagnosis and management. Several movement disorders can present with different phenomenologies, thus several disorders will reappear in various chapters. From the first to this latest edition, the authors aim has always been to empower the modern clinician with the necessary skills in making the evaluation of movement disorders less intimidating and more rewarding.
