Advanced Health Assessment of Women, 4th Edition:
    Clinical Skills and Procedures

    Book

This comprehensive manual contains essential elements aimed at improving the quality of healthcare provided to women across the life span. It provides an enhanced definition of the role and clinical skills of providers, including physician assistants (PAs), certified nurse midwives (CNMs), and nurse practitioners (NPs). The book offers an integrated and unique approach to the healthcare of women. It provides an excellent resource to link theory to clinical practice using critical thinking skills. The book is organized into 10 sections comprising 46 chapters. It begins with a comprehensive review of the basic anatomy and physiology of women. A complete understanding of the complexities of the menstrual cycle and normal vaginal flora, examined at the cellular level, is imperative for accurate understanding and diagnoses of conditions that affect women. The book discusses elements of a comprehensive, developmentally relevant health history with a unique approach to the physiological, psychological, and sociocultural components involved. The basic techniques of the physical examination—with a focus on the gynecologic examination—are outlined. The book provides a comprehensive guide to the assessment of obesity and body mass index. It discusses evaluation of special populations such as pregnant women, lesbian women, and transgenders. The book also describes evaluation of menopausal status, osteoporosis, vulvovaginal atrophy, pelvic pain, vulvodynia, polycystic ovarian syndrome, abnormal uterine bleeding, pelvic organ prolapse, and urinary incontinence. It contains critical information regarding women at risk for sexually transmitted infections. A nationally tested questionnaire is included to help identify the victims of violence and abuse. The book presents assessment of infertility and subfertility. It discusses contraception, cervical cancer prevention, vaginal microscopy, sonohysteroscopy, urinalysis, and other investigative procedures and workups. The book finally describes advanced techniques such as vulvar and endometrial biopsy, acrochordonectomy, cervical polypectomy, pessary insertion, intrauterine insemination, and percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation.

Essentials of Clinical Infectious Diseases, 2nd Edition

    Book

This book presents readers with the essential aspects of the subspecialty infectious diseases. The second edition of the book includes new developments that are consistent with the published peer-reviewed medical literature and published relevant clinical practice guidelines. The book’s intended audiences are students and medical providers in training. It provides information evolved from prior formal didactic lectures or bedside clinical teaching on clinical infectious diseases, microbiology, and antimicrobial pharmacology that was delivered to help students, residents, fellows, and primary care physicians. Current basic science and clinical concepts regarding each relevant infectious disease topic are still written as a synoptic account to make these topics clear and practical for the readers. The book is organized into 18 parts containing 52 chapters. It adheres wherever possible to a standard pattern of description that aims to define the topic and provide an introduction that would include classification, pathophysiology, and epidemiologic information. The book also lists relevant causative microorganisms; describe the clinical aspects and approach to the topic with the physical examination and relevant laboratory methods, diagnostic imaging, and appropriate antimicrobial therapy. The first part provides introduction to clinical reasoning, antimicrobial stewardship, antimicrobial agents, and medical microbiology. The remaining parts describes the approach to various topics such as: fever of unknown origin, leukocytosis, bloodstream and cardiovascular infections, pulmonary infections, gastrointestinal infections, hepatobiliary infections, hepatic infections, renal–urinary infections, neurological infections, orthopedic-related infections, skin and soft-tissue infections, sexually transmitted infections, infections related to obstetrics and gynecology, eye infections, sepsis, transplant-related infections, ectoparasite-related infections, and infection control and epidemiology. The book’s goal is to help guide the reader through the diagnostic evaluation as well as the process of caring for the patient with an infection.

Women’s Health Care in Advanced Practice Nursing, 2nd Edition

    Book

This book provides an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) in women’s health to aim for becoming an influential women’s health provider. It is divided into three parts, where Part 1 looks at women and their health from a population perspective by describing selected their sociodemographic characteristics, presents an overview of the current U.S. women health care workforce, and explores a gender-sensitive approach to health care for women, including integration for sexual and reproductive health (SRH). The section also discusses the risk factors of vulnerable women, and provides feminist frameworks for women’s health. Part II traces experiences of health and health promotion in young, midlife, and older women as a foundation for understanding well-woman’s health. It considers a psychosocial developmental perspective on women’s mental health, and examines the contexts for women’s health and the implications for health care. Women’s sexual health, including special considerations for women who are lesbians, transgender, bisexual, and questioning, warrants special attention of health care providers. In the last part of the book, an array of health problems are addressed that are unique to women, are more prevalent in women (such as breast cancer), and are managed in different ways for women (such as thyroid disorders, diabetes, and heart disease). Some consideration are linked most directly to reproductive health care, including sexual health dysfunctions, vulvar and vaginal health problems, perimenstrual and pelvic symptoms and syndromes, sexually transmitted infections, women’s experiences of HIV/AIDS, human papillomavirus, gynecologic cancers, menopause, osteoporosis, and unintended pregnancy.

Fast Facts About Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs):
A Nurse’s Guide to Expert Patient Care

    Book

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a global health problem that can have lasting health effects. Nurses working with all populations need to have knowledge of the different STIs to develop an awareness of how the different STIs are transmitted as well as the different signs and symptoms and long-term health sequelae. In order to address STIs as a public health problem, nurses need to have a foundational knowledge of the different STIs so that early identification, treatment, and prevention can be addressed in a comprehensive manner. This book describes the different STIs, new and emerging health trends that are occurring, treatment options, and prevention efforts. A key issue addressed in the book is reviewing at-risk populations, who often are underserved and at the highest risk for long-term health consequences that can occur with STIs. This book brings an awareness of the impact of STIs and how nurses working with all populations can increase their knowledge of STIs and be instrumental in addressing a serious global health problem. It reviews common sexually transmitted infections in depth, providing epidemiology, risk factors, signs and symptoms, long-term sequelae, disease transmission, diagnosis, and recommended treatments. It also focuses on nursing-specific interventions that include conducting a sensitive and appropriate patient history, interpreting a holistic consideration of patient lifestyle, and linking population-specific patient education and counseling. The book provides expert guidance from an accomplished forensic nurse/nurse midwife. It addresses the most common STIs to facilitate accurate differential diagnosis and management. The book considers the needs of special populations to provide individualized, culturally sensitive care and offers evidence-based patient information, prevention, and counseling guidance to maximize positive public health outcomes.
