Effective diagnostic practice requires knowledge of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), as well as the ability to implement a process that thoughtfully explores disorder criteria in relation to the unique factors, psychological and contextual, related to the client’s experience. This chapter focuses on clinical practice with Latinx women, with particular attention to immigrant status. It highlights diversity and contextual factors such as globalization and intersectionality that are helpful to grasp and explore in clinical practice. The chapter presents Diversity/Resilience Formulation (DRF) as a format for systematically exploring a client’s strengths and discusses its application to a case study. First, in line with presenting clinical issues within a contextual framework, the chapter reviews Latinx and immigration demographics and then proceeds to discuss globalization, intersectionality, and acculturation. It also discusses the interrelationship of these factors for the purpose of proposing clinical considerations.
