Student nurses rarely have the opportunity to experience an unstructured, uncertain, and unforgiving clinical simulation in a new and imposing environment. As such, faculty identified the helicopter simulator as an opportunity to place BSN pediatric students in an environment that was new to them and would expand their horizons in regard to patient care and the development of clinical judgment even if their stress levels were elevated. The overarching goals for the simulation provide efficient and safe care to a “trauma patient” during an intense and uncertain situation; strengthen the “thinking like a nurse” skills of noticing, interpreting, responding, and reflecting; and use effective communication skills and teamwork to develop priorities, collaborate, and communicate. The helicopter simulator provides the perfect stressful situation to stimulate greater intensity within the students, forcing their focus on the needs of the patient.
