Abstract

There is a significant connection between trauma and disability which can impact occupational function and rehabilitation planning. Complex trauma is a less well known but more severe form of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) characterized by a history of multiple traumas occurring within an interpersonal relationship in childhood. Complex trauma creates cognitive and physical disruptions in the body that significantly impact quality of life (QOL) and does may not respond to mainstream PTSD treatments, but may respond well to alternative or complementary treatment such as yoga therapy. Yoga therapy is a mind and body practice that can reduce the mental and physical symptoms of trauma through physical postures, breath work, and mindfulness/meditation. While support exists for yoga therapy complementing traditional treatment for PTSD, the application of yoga therapy for individuals experiencing complex trauma has received less attention. Because of the severe symptomology, functional impairments, and reduced QOL associated with complex trauma, developing innovative treatments is a high priority. This paper presents an overview of complex trauma, describeshow the essential mechanisms of yoga address the symptoms of complex trauma, and provides evidence that supports incorporating yoga into treatment for complex trauma. Recommendations for integrating yoga and mindfulness into the rehabilitation counseling process for individuals with complex trauma is also provided.
