Abstract

This book assists in the organization of the thinking while broadening the perspective of practitioners, teachers, and students in advanced practice psychiatric nursing. It validates and encourages psychiatric-mental health advanced practice registered nurses (PMH-APRNs) to draw from as wide an information base as possible during clinical practice. The book is divided into five sections. Section I provides an overview of the theoretical and evidence base for practice and an exploration of the concept of shared decision making and reaching concordance between clinicians and clients. The second section explores the foundations necessary for the practitioner to implement integrated practice. Chapters present the overviews of psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, and complementary and alternative approaches in the context of the stages of treatment. In Section III, the focus is on integrative management of specific syndromes. This includes chapters that discuss mood disorders, generalized anxiety disorders (GAD), psychotic symptoms, sleep disturbances, disordered eating, cognitive impairment, disordered attention including attention deficit hyperactivity disorders (ADHD), self-directed injury, other-directed violence, and disorders of impulse control. Most chapters contain at least one decision tree regarding initiation of treatment. The fourth section covers aspects of managing substance misuse, medical problems, pregnancy, and forensic issues that often co-occur with psychiatric syndromes. The last section of the book covers the importance of how maintaining competence and quality are part of clinical practice. The chapters discuss quality and safety education in nursing (QSEN) competencies, telehealth, and a global perspective of connections and mentoring.
